June Blooms

Things are still behind schedule this year. My old garden roses have buds that are just beginning to open. Normally they would be blooming by early June. You'll have to check back next week to see some roses!

My mid/late-season herbaceous peonies are also just beginning to open. The late one has not even begun yet. Again, about two weeks behind.

My blue penstemon is looking great right now. The color is really electric.

This is the first year of bloom for my yellow foxgloves. I started them from seed last year. Supposedly this type will be perennial... I sure hope so because I love it!

Astrantia is also just getting started, not at its peak yet.

Thymes are blooming here and there, like this one at the foot of some rocks.

Thyme and Sedum 'Angelina'

Some things have been blooming for a while. This polemonium, for example, has been going for several weeks now.

And the Lady's Mantle.

Alchemilla mollis (Lady's Mantle)

Several geraniums, including 'Johnson's Blue' and 'Biokovo'.

A new crop of blue tradescantia flowers opens each morning, and the foliage still looks fresh at this point in the summer.

Corydalis lutea is an all-summer blooming machine.

The plant that takes the prize for longest-blooming in my garden is this lamium. It was one of the first to begin and will continue to bloom until frost.

Bleeding hearts are past their prime, but a few blooms still dangle from the huge mass of foliage, complementing the nearby sprays of pink heuchera.

Finally, the Lamb's Ears I winter-sowed last year are starting to bloom. The flowers are not attractive, but the plant makes nice edger in this hot driveway border.

  1. Your garden is looking lovely, we seem to have late gardens on both sides of the Atlantic, mine has never been as late as this year. Love your dark red peony, really a show-stopper. Happy GBBD!

  2. Oh, I love peonies, which I cant grow in San Diego and I also love lamb's ears, which I could grow but haven't. Perhaps you have inspired me to do that! Jeannine

  3. Your peonies are so pretty and I also like your Lady's Mantle with its delicate blooms and foliage. We are behind here as well by about a month so I am hoping the season extends longer this year. Happy GBBD!

  4. Gorgeous, all of it. Except for the roses, you have mostly what I can't grow in the hot and humid south. It's a treat to visit.

  5. Your peonies are gorgeous! I do like the look of that Foxglove, I must look into that, especially as it's perennial.
Your blog just reminded my that my G. Johnson's Blue hasn't returned this year - I must have a closer look tomorrow.
    Happy Bloom Day!

  6. I envy you your herbaceous peonies and the astrantia, neither of which will grow in my area. I've been looking for a source for that yellow foxglove for some time - I grew it at my former home but haven't seen it offered locally in years.. I did find it in the inventory of one on-line California grower and have put it on my wish list so, maybe, someday...

    1. I grew mine from seed that I got from Swallotail, I think... It's hard to find plants but many seed companies sell the seed. They were really easy to grow from seed, but don't bloom until the second year.

  7. Thank you for the tour along your June flowers. Your peonies look gorgeous and I am especially fond of the Rose 'Ispahan', a beauty.

  8. Your flowers are all very beautiful. The peonies are my favorites. I have two different perennial foxgloves, but neither has ever bloomed.

  9. Very pretty. I had those foxgloves in our garden for years, but lost them in the drought last year. I still have some seeds here that are a couple of years old - I will try starting them - I miss those foxgloves.

    Your garden is so pretty

  10. Thyme and sedum look pretty near stones. Your roses started to bloom and are lovely! Mine are with buds only.Tradescantia is nice as well but it opens in the mornings and closes its flowers at the afternoon. Great blooming garden!
    Have a nice week!

  11. I see we have a number of plants in common. I've had that yellow foxglove for about 6 or 7 years, and love it! There have been a couple of hoverflies enjoying the nectar from them for a week or two. I hope yours lives a long time, too.
